James Madison Hall was born in Indiana on February 10, 1851, the son of Amos and Catherine Hall. He has lived in Iowa ever since he was about two years of age, the first of this time being spent in Benton county and the last forty-one years at Winterset.
He was married on May 12, 1875 to Sarah Finney. Of the four children given to this home, two died in infancy, but two now remain to mourn the loss of a father, B. C. Hall, of Long Beach, California, and Mrs. Mabel Kerr of Winterset. Along with the wife of Mr. Hall are a brother, Lincoln Hall of Des Moines, and the sister, Mrs. Eugene Lindsay of Eldora, the only two remaining children of a family of eleven.
Mr. Hall was a member of the Baptist church of Winterset. He was a peace-loving, industrious, kind-hearted man, always serving others in some way.
Mr. and Mrs. Hall went to California last fall to spend the winter at the home of their son. Mr. Hall has been in his usual good health until a very short sickness overtook him; during his illness he was remarkably cheerful and thoughtful of those about him, and not one word of complaint passed his lips. The end came on February 29, 1924.
The body was brought back to Winterset, and funeral services were held at the Baptist Church on March 6th, Thursday at 2 p. m. conducted by the pastor, Stanley A. Gillet, and the body was laid to rest in the Cemetery here.
