Donald F. Gifford, Cumming

Donald Franklin Gifford, 72, of Cumming died of pancytopenia Jan. 27, 1999, at Kavanagh Hospice House in Des Moines.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 30, at Collins Funeral Home in Winterset with Pastor Jeff Ropp officiating. Burial was at Peru Cemetery, with military graveside services preformed by Cumming American Legion Post 0562.

Donald Gifford was born Jan. 13, 1927, to James Franklin and Lelia Marie (Oglesbee) Gifford of Murray. Having grown up in the Peru area, he spent most of his adult life in the Cumming area. He first married Mildred Dymond in 1955 in Bethany, Mo. Mildred died in 1982. He later married Kathryn LaRue Draper on July 23, 1983, in Cumming. Donald was a retired track foreman, having worked for Great Western Railroad (formerly Northwestern Railroad). An Army veteran of the Korean conflict, he was a member of the Cumming American Legion Post 0562.

Besides his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

He is survived by his wife Kathryn of Cumming; one daughter, Dorothy Day of Clarion; two stepsons, Duane Nordeen of Waynesville, Mo., and Lawrence Nordeen of Urbandale; two step-daughters, Marilyn Newton of DeSoto and Beverly Nordeen of Fort Dodge; two brothers, James and William Gifford, both of Cumming; one sister, Sadie Gifford of Winterset; one grandchild; and nine step-grandchildren.
