George W. Tracy was born in Montgomery county, Indiana on the 14th of February, 1848. He departed from this life Jan. 9, 1918, aged 77 years, 10 months and 26 days.

His parents, Vezy and Nancy Grennard Tracy, were born in Leniton, Ky. When 19 years of age, he took charge of his father's farm and so continued until 1864, in which year he moved to Henry county, Illinois. In 1868 he came to Madison county, Iowa, and settled upon a farm in Douglas township, which was his home until his death.

Mr. Tracy was married Sept. 1, 1859 to Miss Sarah Gilky, at Waynetown, Ind. To this union were born six children, of which his wife and four children survive him: James A. and Oliver E. Tracy of Winterset, J. Bishop of Andover, Kansas, Edward L. Tracy of Afton, Iowa. Two preceded him, Effie May Alexander in 1907 and one in infancy. Mr. Tracy united with the Christian church in his boyhood, of which he has been a faithful member until the end.
