Death of Mrs. E. Edwards

Mrs. Elizabeth Edwards, who had been a resident of Madison county for the past thirty-five years, died Saturday morning, August 10th, at her home, south of Winterset. Mrs. Edwards, who was 77 years of age, had been in poor health since in December 1909, when she was stricken with neuritis and paralysis. She had partially regained her health, but since the death of her husband, William H. Edwards, last December, she had failed considerably. On last Thursday morning, August 8th, she was stricken with paralysis, which left her unconscious until her death on Saturday.

Mrs. Edwards was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Gibson, and was born in Sheffield, Illinois, August 17, 1851. She was the eldest of a family of four daughters and two sons, of whom only Miss Lura Gibson, still on the old homestead, and George Gibson, of Kalispell, Montana, survive her.

The marriage of Miss Gibson and Mr. Edwards was an event of September 3, 1869. In the fall of 1869 they left their Illinois home and located in Marion county, Iowa, near Knoxville. After five years they moved to Kasson in Madison county, from where they moved in their late homestead. Five children survive the mother, Gaylord Edwards and Mrs. Linnie Kitchell of Winterset; Marion and Earl of Huntsville, Missouri, and Jay, of Grand Island, Nebraska. Two children had preceded the mother and father in death.

In addition to her children and her brother and sister, she leaves 14 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Rev. J. M. Herbst, of Iowa Falls, conducted the funeral services at the home, south of town, Monday afternoon, August 12th, at 2:30 o'clock, and burial was in the Winterset cemetery. Rev. A. P. Keast assisted with the services.

Mrs. Elizabeth Gibson Edwards

Elizabeth Gibson was born in Bureau county, Illinois, August 17, 1851, and died August 10, 1929, aged 77 years, 11 months and 23 days. She was the oldest of a family of four daughters and two sons, the children of William and Mary Gibson of Sheffield, Illinois. Of this family, one sister, Miss Lura Gibson, still on the old homestead, and George Gibson of Kalispell, Montana, survive her.

On September 3, 1869, she was united in marriage to William H. Edwards, of Sheffield, Illinois. In the late fall of 1869, they left their Illinois home and located in Marion county, Iowa, near Knoxville. They remained there about five years, removing to Kasson, Madison county, from where they moved to their late homestead thirty-five years ago. To this union were born seven childen: Gaylard Edwards and Mrs. Linnie Kitchell of Winterset; Marion and Earl of Huntsville, Missouri, and Jay of Grand Island, Nebraska, and Mrs. Lara Couch and Fred, both of whom preceded their parents in death. On December 24, 1928, Mr. Edwards passed away, leaving the wife of almost sixty years very lonely, and often she would remark to her family and friends that she too was ready to join him.

In December, 1909, Mrs. Edwards was stricken with neuritis and paralysis, which left her almost an invalid for many months. She regained her health, however, to the extent to be able to care for her home for a number of years. In addition to the brother and sister and the five children who mourn her passing, she is survived by 14 grandchildren and one great grandchild, besides a number of nieces and nephews and a large circle of neighbors and friends.

In the fall of 1926, both Mr. and Mrs. Edwards having become so feeble in health as to be no longer able to take full care of themselves and home, Mrs. Kitchell, with her husband and two childen moved from their home southwest of Winterset, into the old home with her parents, where they cared for them up to their last days, which came so close together.

On last Thurday morning, August 8th, Mrs. Edwards was stricken with paralysis which left her unconscious until her passing at 10 o'clock, Saturday morning, August 10th, four of her children being here at the end.

Thus has come to an end the life of another of those earnest, noble pioneer souls, who has left to her children, grandchildren and friends a memory as a blessed heritage of a loving mother, a faithful, devoted wife and a constant friend.

Funeral services were held at the country home on Monday, August 12th, conducted by Rev. J. M. Herbst of Iowa Falls, assisted by Rev. A. P. Keast of Winterset. Burial was in the Rock City cemetery, by the side of her husband.
