Irvin Givan

Irvin, son of Henry and Anna Farquhar Givan, was born in Wayne county, Iowa, July 6, 1870. His early boyhood was spent in Wayne county, near Humeston, and when he was 13 years old, he came with the family to Grand River township, in Madison county. He grew to manhood here. After the death of his father, in 1893 (?), Irvin made a home for his mother. They moved to Jackson township more than 30 years ago, to the farm which had since been his home. He never married, and after his mother passed away in 1912, he had lived alone. He was thrifty and industrious and became a prosperous farmer. In the later years he had turned his attention to stock raising.

He had many friends who appreciated him because of his kindly, genial ways, his friendliness and helpfulness.

He seemed in good health until the last few months. Three weeks before his death, he came to the home of his sister, in Winterset, and later went to the Winterset hospital. He suffered much while there, but remained cheerful and had a joke for every friend. He passed away on April 23, at the age of 59 years, 9 months and 17 days. His brother, John, passed away less than a year ago, and those who are left are two brothers, Robert Givan of near Macksburg, and Will, of Jackson township, and three sisters, Mrs. Howard Kivett, of Grand River township; Mrs. John Handley, of Winterset, and Mrs. F. P. Handley, of near Lorimor, and many nieces and nephews. He leaves also many friends.
