Mrs. Emily Pease is Killed in Accident

Was Struck By Car At Northwest Corner Of Square Thursday Night.

Mrs. Emily Anna Pease, of Lorimor, was fatally injured here, last Thursday night, May 10th, when struck by a car owned by C. L. Newton and driven by Miss Kathryne Armbrest, a high school senior. The accident occurred about eight o'clock as Mrs. Pease was crossing the street at the northwest corner of the square. She was knocked to the pavement, and it is thought that the blow she received when her head hit the cement, caused the fatal injury.

Immediately after the accident she was put in an ambulance, to be taken to Des Moines, but she died a few minutes after the trip was started. It was several hours before she was identified. She had been taking care of Mrs. Alfred Turner at the H. N. Shaw home, and the people who witnessed the accident did not know her. At the time of the accident she was on her way to attend a meeting of the Rebekah lodge, and some of those members identified her.

The coroner's jury met the following morning at ten o'clock, but they described the accident as "unavoidable." A slight rain was falling and it is thought that she did not see the car. Witnesses stated that she started across, then stopped, and went on, in front of the oncoming car, and that Miss Armbrest was not driving fast. She and three other students were returning from a glee club picnic at the City park.

Mrs. Pease was sixty years of age. A son, DeMar Pease of Afton, came to Winterset Friday morning, and accompanied the body to Farmington, Iowa, Saturday. Funeral services were held there Sunday afternoon. She is also survived by a son and daughter, who are residents of Kansas.
