Samuel S. Powell, well known resident of Winterset and Madison county through most of his life, died Thursday, January 27, at Clarinda, where he had moved in 1947. He was 81 years of age.

Mr. Powell was born in Peoria county, Illinois on April 22, 1873, a son of Orrin and Mary Hunt Powell. He came to Madison county with his parents when he was 8 years of age. He spent his early life in farming, and later engaged in business in Winterset. In 1947, he and Mrs. Powell moved to Clarinda to make their home with their daughter and her husband there. After Mrs. Powell's death he lived for a while in Winterset and Des Moines before returning to Clarinda.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Golda Jorgenson and Mrs. Ruth Drees, both of Des Moines, two grandchildren; two great grandchildren, a brother, Melvin Powell of Minnesota; and a sister, Julia Clifton of Winterset.

Funeral Services were held Sunday from the Richards Funeral home, conducted by the Rev. W. W. Steinmetz, pastor of the Winterset Methodist church. Burial was made in the Peru cemetery.
