Death of Judge A. Deeter

Judge Abraham Deeter, a former resident of Winterset, died Monday, July 1st, at his home in Lamar, Colorado, at the age of 84 years. He had been in poor health for several weeks, but had been able to perform the sacred Memorial Day services for his comrades at Lamar, on May 30th. He was the last surviving member of the Lamar Post.

Judge Deeter, as he was commonly known for his service as justice of the peace, was born in Ohio, August 18, 1844. After serving in the Civil war, from the state of Iowa, he returned here and was married. They had five children, and the mother, Mrs. Anna Deeter, died 22 years ago. He was married later to Mrs. Clara Swadley, who passed away in January, 1928.

In 1886, Mr. Deeter moved to Lamar, where he had continued to reside. The sons and daughters surviving are: Alva Deeter, Lamar; Mrs. Fred Lee, Lamar; Mrs. Alta Griffin, Salt Lake City. Another daughter, Mrs. Cora E. Cade, preceded her father in death.

Those close to Mr. Deeter stated that as the last Memorial Day approached he felt a premonition that his time was near at hand. He expressed the fear several times, that he would not survive long enough to pay tribute once more to his comrades of the sixties.

The Rev. Joseph Walter Field conducted the funeral services, Sunday, July 7th, at the First Baptist church. He was assisted by the Dr. J. C. Horn. Burial was in the Lamar cemetery.
