May 26, 1999Leslie Raymond Goeldner, 95, of Earlham died of cancer May 15, 1999, at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 24 (1999), at the United Methodist Church in Earlham with the Rev. Alberta Ervin officiating. Burial was at Earlham Cemetery.
Leslie Goeldner was born May 30, 1903, in Keokuk County to Louis and Dora Goeldner. He was a 1922 graduate of Creston High School and a 1927 graduate of the University of Iowa. In December of 1929, he married Beulah Bohrer in Page County. He taught in the vocational arts department at Fort Dodge for five years and was then a partner in the Sheffield Press newspaper until he moved to Earlham in 1934 as editor and publisher of the Echo. He retired in October 1971 after publishing the Echo for 37 years.
Leslie served on the Library Board, the Earlham School Board, the Madison County Ration Board during World War II, was chairman of the Council on Aging for Area XI, was a member of the Madison County Committee for Farmer Home Association, was active in the Methodist Church, past president of the Earlham Business Association, Lions Club and Association of Retired Persons. He assisted in organizing the Earlham Care Program, which was one of the first in the United States. He also was a Mason, Shriner and past volunteer fireman.
He was preceded in death by his wife and three brothers.
He is survived by one daughter, Marilyn of Boone; two sons, Charles (wife Jacquil) of Boulder, Colo., and Allen (wife Marlys) of Collegeville,Pa.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchilddren.
