Grant Stahl

Grant, son of Michael and Mary Talley Stahl, was born near Diagonal, Iowa, Feb. 9th, 1866. He grew to young manhood in that community. He finished the rural schools and attended Simpson College two years.

On August 27, 1891, he was united in marriage to Miss Nannie McCahan and they established their home on a farm one-half mile east of his boyhood home. On the day following his death they would have celebrated their thirty-eighth wedding anniversary.

One daughter, Bessie Mae, came to bless their union. They spent thirty-four years on their farm southwest of Diagonal, moving from there to Winterset, Iowa, in December, 1925. In youth he united with the Methodist Episcopal church and has ever remained a faithful and ardent follower of his Savior, taking interest in every good enterprise of the community.

He was active in church work both in Diagonal and Winterset, being steward and trustee in the former for over thirty years. In Winterset he taught a Sunday school class of young men in which he took great interest and was also a Steward of this church. His useful life came to a close at the Methodist hospital at Des Moines following a major operation. Six years ago he underwent a severe operation, which has contributed much to cause the fatality of this last illness.

He leaves to mourn his going, his widow, Mrs. Nannie Stahl, his daughter and her husband, the Rev. and Mrs. F. Clare McCallon, one grand daughter, Betty Pauline McCallon, two step-grandsons, H. Davis and F. Dorraine McCallon, four sisters, Josephine Stahl Beall and Mrs. C. M. King of Mt. Ayr, Eva Stahl of Indianola and one brother, Sherman Stahl of Chicago, nieces and nephews and host of friends.

His death is a great loss to his immediate family, to his relatives and friends, to the community in which he had spent his life and in which he still retained his interest, and to his later neighbors and friends in Winterset, where he had already made many new attachments.
