Florence Benz

Mrs. Florence Mae Benz of Dexter, Iowa, departed this life, Tuesday March 2, 1976, in Madison County Memorial Hospital, Winterset, Iowa, at the age of 84 years 5 months 15 days.

A blood clot formed in the right leg, which later made amputation necessary along with complications of old age infirmities, was the cause of death.

Florence Mae Grieser, daughter of Theodore William Grieser, and Susan Frances (Pulse) Grieser, was born September 16, 1891, in Milan, Illinois.

She moved with her family to Olin, Iowa and later to Vivian, South Dakota in 1906. On December 18, 1907, she was united in marriage to Henry W. S. Benz at Fort Pierre, South Dakota, and came immediately to Dexter, Iowa, living on farms in this vicinity and in Stuart, Iowa. In 1920, they purchased the farm which had been the home of Mr. Benz' parents located one mile southeast of Dexter. They continued to live there until the death of Mr. Benz in 1961, and then she moved to her home in Dexter. In September 1973, she took up residence in the Perry Lutheran Home for the Aged, Perry, Iowa, and in December 1975, she moved to the Villa West Care Center, Winterset, Iowa.

Deceased was confirmed before the altar of God in the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dexter, on February 21, 1909, and was a devout and active member in the church.

There are left to mourn the death of this good woman, her three children; one daughter, Lucille Marquerite Benz Stoll (Mr. Robert Stoll) of Orient, Iowa; two sons, William Henry Benz of Casper, Wyoming, and Howard Byron Benz of Earlham, Iowa; one sister, Mrs. Elsie Coleman, Valentine, Nebraska; and one brother, Howard S. Grieser. Five sisters and two brothers preceded her in death.

She leaves to mourn ten grandchildren, 21 great grand children, and two great-great grandchildren, and a large company of friends.

The funeral services were held from Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dexter, Iowa, Saturday afternoon, March 6, 1976, at one-thirty o’clock, conducted by her pastor Rev. Norman M. Luecht. Interment was in the family plot, Dexter cemetery. Casket bearers were Carl Jobst, Herman Lager, Alvin Scar, Norman Scar, Leonard Scar and Dennis Scar.
