John William (Jack) Bruns of Winterset was fatally injured Saturday while working on a highway paving project near Moville. An employee of the Carlson Construction Company of Decorah, he was drinking a cup of coffee near a large concrete mixer when a truck backed over him.

He was taken to a hospital in Sioux City, where he died Sunday, Aug. 16, despite the fact that 60 pints of blood were administered in less than 24 hours, in the battle to save his life.

Mr. Bruns was 35 years of age, and had been a resident of Madison county most of his life. He was born here Feb. 25, 1929, a son of Joseph E. and Jennie Allgeyer Bruns.

During the Korean War he served in the U. S. Navy. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic church at Winterset.

He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph E. Bruns of Winterset; a daughter, Jan, 11, and a son, Douglas, 5, of Osceola; three brothers, Paul Bruns of Winterset, M. Sgt. Robert Bruns of the U.S. Army, who is stationed in Colorado, and Joe W. Bruns of Adair; and five sisters, Mrs. Mary Williams of California, Mrs. Nora English of California, Mrs Genevieve Melroy of Winterset, Mrs. Elizabeth Campbell of Wichita, Kan., and Mrs. Dorothy Kennedy of Lake City, Minn.

Rosary services were held Tuesday evening at the Collins Funeral home. Funeral services were held this Wednesday from St. Joseph's Catholic church, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. Msgr. John W. Higgins.
