ELMER BECHTEL

Elmer Bechtel, son of John and Jane Stanley Bechtel, was born at Milligan, Nebraska on March 1, 1875. He departed from this life on September 25, 1961 at the age of 86 years, 6 months and 25 days at Perry, Iowa.

In his earlier life he engaged in farming both in Nebraska and in Missouri.

On November 18, 1898, he was united in marriage to Anna Keener Bechtel. To them were born four children; Oliver Bechtel of Adel, Iowa; Virgil Bechtel of Concord, California; Pearl Hakes of Des Moines, Iowa; and Paula Badgerow of Grand River, Iowa. Anna Bechtel, his wife, died on July 23, 1914.

Elmer engaged in business in Earlham from 1901 to 1936, and was respected and loved for his friendliness, generous helpfulness and integrity of character. He was an active member of the Earlham Friends Church, serving from time to time as Sunday School teacher. Sunday School superintendent, and in other capacities. For the last few years he made his home with his daughter Pearl at Dallas Center.

He is survived by his children and the following brothers and sisters; John Bechtel, of Des Moines; Sadie Kirkpatrick of Mason City; Bertha Thompson of Waurika, Oklahoma; Elsie Pray of Des Moines; and Clara Hodson of Forest City. He leaves to cherish his memory, also ten grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Rites Held For Elmer Bechtel

Funeral services were held Thursday Sept. 28, for Elmer Bechtel, a native resident of Earlham. Mr. Bechtel was the father of Oliver Bechtel of Adel. Services were at the Friends Church in Earlham, with Rev. Willard Reynolds officiating.

A businessman in Earlham for many years, he operated the IGA grocery store there prior to his retirement. He passed away at a Perry nursing home where he had been for about one year. He was 86 years old at the time of his death.

Casket bearers were: Gale Marston, Wallace Jackson, Mervyn McClennon, Ralph Hunter, Clifford Stanley and Forrest Hibbs. Robert G. Fisher was soloist accompanied by Miriam Caudron. Mrs. Wallace Jackson and Mrs. Frank Wilson assisted with the flowers. Burial was at the Earlham cemetery.
