September 2003Bret Croat Golightly, 6, died September 6, 2003, at Blank Children's Hospital in Des Moines. Bret died after a courageous 13-month fight against leukemia, which included a bone marrow transplant.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, September 10, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Waukee, where Fathers Vince Rosonke and Robert Schoemann will officiate. Burial will be in St. Marys Cemetery, St. Marys, Iowa.
Bret was born in Des Moines on May 26, 1997, the son of Daniel and Michelle (Croat) Golightly. He loved trains, fishing, mushroom hunting, walking in the woods and the garden. He was strong willed and never knew a stranger. He loved to bake and made Christmas cutout cookies during and even before the Christmas season.
He is survived by his parents, Dan and Michelle Golightly of Booneville; a sister, Karlee, at home; paternal grandparents, Dale and Vera Golightly of Booneville; maternal grandparents, Ken and Linda Croat of St. Marys; aunts and uncles include, Brad and wife Shelly Golightly of Perry, Randy Golightly of Booneville, Jean Golightly of DeSoto, Karyn Millia of E. Stroudsburg, PA, Becki and husband, Bob Williams of Lonetree, CO; Randall and wife Janice Croat of Ankeny and Jacqueline Croat of Taos, NM.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, September 9 at Ochiltree Funeral Service and Aftercare in Winterset, where the family will be present to receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. A Vigil Service will be held at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be directed to ChildLife at Blank Children's Hospital and Minneapolis Ronald McDonald House 608 Ontario St. SE, Minneapolis, MN 55414.
