October 9, 2002Leonard Michael Flander, 68, of Winterset died of cancer Oct. 6, 2002, at his home.
A memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Winterset with Father Chris Hartshorn officiating. Burial of the cremains will be at Winterset Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church from noon to 8 p.m. today (Wed., Oct. 9), with the family present from 6 - 8 p.m. A vigil service will be a 7 p.m.
Len Flander was born April 6, 1934, to Leo John and Loretta Kathleen (Shannon) Flander of Sigourney. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in the Korean conflict. On March 2, 1954, he married Mary Elizabeth Hogan in Iowa City. A graduate of the University of Iowa, he earned his Juris Doctorate in August of 1959, also from the University of Iowa. He had resided in Des Moines for five years before moving to Winterset in July of 1964. Len was an attorney with Flander, Casper & Rosien, P.C. in Winterset. He also was a member of the V.F.W., Madison County Historical Society, Lakeview Country Club and St. Joseph Catholic Church, all of Winterset, Iowa State Bar Association, Madison County Bar Association, Delta Theta Phi fraternity, U of I Alumni Association (lifetime member) and the Arbor Society.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister.
He is survived by his wife, Beth, of Winterset, a son, Terry M. Flander (wife Becky) of West Des Moines; two daughters, Susan Flander of Mason City and Gina Robinson (husband David) of Winterset, a sister LaVera Bruns of Sigourney and
five grandchildren.Funeral arrangements were handled by Collins Oak Park Chapel in Winterset.
