Page 1Death of Jefferson Wheat
Jefferson Wheat, an early settler of Madison county, died at his home in Oak Park, Des Moines, Thursday, September 6th, at the age of 93 years. Mr. Wheat was a former sheriff of Madison county, serving in that capacity from 1888 to 1892. He continued to reside in Winterset until in 1918, when he moved to Des Moines, where he has since made his home.
Mr. Wheat was born in Alabama November 7, 1834, and came to Madison county and located near St. Charles, in 1852. He later moved to St. Charles, where he was engaged in the mercantile business. In 1862, at the age of 27 years, Mr. Wheat enlisted in Company F, 39th Regiment Voluntary Infantry. He was mustered out June 5th, 1865, at Washington D.C. It was in 1887 that the Wheats moved to Winterset.
His wife, to whom he was married 50 years, proceeded him in death twelve years ago, in 1916. He had no children, nor are there any brothers or sisters surviving him. He leaves to mourn his loss the present Mrs. Wheat and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Wheat had been in poor health, because of his advanced age, for several months.
The Rev. A. P. Keast conducted funeral services at Ramsey-Richards funeral home, Saturday, September 8th, ----- made in the Winterset cemetery.
