William Martin Travis, who has been a resident of Madison county for over seventy years, died last Thursday evening, September 20th, at the age of seventy-five years. Last December Mr. Travis had a stroke of paralysis, and he had never regained his health since that time. This was followed by another stroke, and he had been critically ill for some time, at his home in the southeast part of Winterset.
The deceased was born in Brookville, Pennsylvania, December 28, 1852, and when he was three years of age, the family moved to Madison county, where he has since resided. He was married to Mary E. Young at Peru, August 14, 1872. They made their home in Walnut township for a number of years, but have lived in Winterset since 1899. Mr. Travis took an active interest in the affairs of the county and for many years was a most efficient secretary of the schools in Walnut township.

Of this large family only three have preceded him in death, one daughter, Lena; one grandson, Ralph Travis, and one great granddaughter, Carol Knorr.
On March 26, 1872, he became a member of the Masonic fraternity at Prairie Grove, later transferring his membership to the Evening Star lodge at Winterset.
The Rev. A. P. Keast conducted the funeral services at the home, Sunday afternoon, September 22d, at 2:30 o'clock, and burial was made in the local cemetery.
