Obituary - Hugh L. Ballentine

Hugh Littick Ballentine was born December 28, 1873, in Madison County, Iowa, near Winterset, and died suddenly, Tuesday evening, October 5th, 1943, at his home northeast of Laclede, near which he has lived all the rest of his allotted span of years. He was united in marriage to Minnie L. Arganbright, April 21, 1897. To this union four children were born: Mary Grace, Katherine Emily, Virginia Coila, and Mesba Hildergrade. His wife preceded him in death March 18, 1904.

On April 18, 1906, he was married to Ada M. Thomas. To this union two children born; Russell Hugh and Vivian Maude. He was preceded in death by four Sisters and three brothers. He leaves to mourn his passing, his children; Virginia C. Applegate and Melba H. Edwards of Wamego; Katherine E. Dewey and Russell H. of Onaga; Vivian M. of Santa Monica, California; Grace M. of the home; five grandchildren, Jean and Nancy Dewey, Dale Edwards, Glenn Applegate and Ralph H. Ballentine; also three brothers and one sister; Alexander of Westmoreland, Charles A. of Winterset, Iowa; Oliver C. of Onaga; and Mrs. Mary Dawe of Santa Monica, California; and a host of friends and neighbors.

In his early youth he was baptized and joined the Methodist Church and since young manhood he has been a member of the Modern Woodman Lodge. He was a true friend and was always ready and willing to help those who needed him. His memory will linger in the hearts of many loyal friends and neighbors. In his home he was a loving and thoughtful father and will be sadly missed by his children.

The funeral service was conducted by Rev. H. T. Vigour of the Wamego Methodist Church at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, October 10, at the Stewart Funeral Home. He was laid to rest in the Laclede cemetery in charge of the Woodman Lodge of Wamego.
