Earlham Echo – November 20, 1986

Marion S. Wilson was born February 21, 1911. He was the youngest of three sons born to Jehu and Hattie Stubbs Wilson and spent his entire life on the family farm in Dallas County near the town of Earlham.

Marion was a birthright member of the Earlham Friends Church and received his education in the Earlham Schools, by first attending a little country school near his home.

On November 12, 1938, Marion and Dortha Ross were married in Shenandoah, Iowa. They were the parents of three children, Donald, who died at birth, Mary Louise (Mrs. Don Hauschildt of Fontanelle, Iowa) and Marjorie Ellen (Mrs. Russell Lowe, of Dallas Center, Iowa).

Marion farmed the family acres although it was not a favorite occupation. In 1941 he bought his first welding machine and used his self-taught talents as a welder while he worked at the Redfield soybean plant for several years. Word spread his achievements and successes as a welder and persons from all walks of life came to his shop at his home with repair jobs. His greatest joy was in the challenge of a task that other said was impossible, but he was able to accomplish it, some times making the item stronger and better than when it was new.

On November 21, 1964 Marion’s wife, Dortha, succumbed to a terminal illness which created a great void in the lives of he and his daughters.

In his years of loneliness, Marion met Harlene Lepovitz, of Adel, who with her daughters, Kathy and Gloria, were also needing companionship. Their close friendship was one that lasted until Marion’s death.

Marion was a familiar customer at the local café when he went to town for his breakfast nearly every morning. He enjoyed the camaraderie of the clientele which often, included his niece, Helen Ludwick. She spent many hours traveling with him to nearby towns so that he would have some one to visit with on the way.

For his 75th birthday in February this year, Marion’s family held an open house at his church in his honor. The response of family, neighbors and friends pleased him greatly.

Several times recently Marion had expressed a desire to leave this world quickly. His wish was granted when he died of a heart attack the night of November 4, 1986 as he was driving home from Adel.

Those of his immediate family who survive him include his two daughters and their husbands and six grandsons, Jon, Scott, Jason and Mark Hauschildt and Brian and David Lowe; nieces Martha Koboldt and Helen Ludwick, of Earlham and a nephew Floyd Wilson of Indianola, Iowa.
