Obituaries - Eva "Gem" Lillard, Winterset

Eva "Gem" Lillard, 90, of Winterset died of complications from a stroke Sept. 5, 2001, at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 8, at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset with the Rev. Robert Barrick officiating. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery.

Gem Lillard was born Dec. 26, 1910, in Madison County to U. S. and Ella (Rollstin) Woodward. A 1928 graduate of Winterset High School, she also was a 1931 graduate of the Iowa School of Beauty in Des Moines and a 1932 graduate of the University of Iowa. She married Donal R. Lillard on Aug. 19, 1934, at her parents' Winterset home. Before her marriage she had been employed at the Grace Lamb Beauty Shoppe from 1932 to 1934. Gem was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Winterset, the Winterset Women's Club, a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and American Legion Auxiliary, and a life member of the Madison County Historical Society. She also did Red Cross volunteer sewing for more than 25 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a sister, a brother and a grandson.

She is survived by two daughters, Marcia Ann Duncan (husband Ed) of Frankfort, Mich., and Judy Wright (husband Larry) of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a son David Woodward Lillard of Winterset; and seven grandchildren.
