October 1922John A. Welty, son of Peter and Mary Magdalene Welty, was born Dec. 20, 1857 in Webster township at the old Welty homestead in Madison county, Iowa, and departed this life in his home in Grand River township, near Macksburg, Oct. 16, 1922, aged 64 years, 9 months and 26 days. He was converted in youth and fixed his faith in God, which carried him through to the end of life. He united with the Evangelical church at Oak Grove in Webster township and remained a member of that church until 1915, when he moved to his home in Grand River township, and united with the Methodist Episcopal church, of which he was a faithful member till death. On Aug. 30, 1883, he was united in marriage to Miss Ida F. Elsbury who faithfully shared the joys and sorrows of life with him till he was taken hence. In the winter of 1883 the hand of affliction was laid upon him, which he bore heroically all these years.
To this union were born three children, one daughter, Mrs. O’Brien of Jamison, Mo.; the two sons of Macksburg, all of whom were present at his funeral. During the last year his suffering was intense and at times it appeared as though the end would come, from which he would rally. During the closing weeks of his life he often spoke of his departure with a desire to be with Jesus and his faith in God was firm to the end.
He leaves a devoted and loving wife, three children and a large circle of friends to mourn their loss for he made friends of all whom he knew. The funeral was conducted from the Macksburg M.E. church. The sermon was preached by his pastor, Rev. M. Hulbert, assisted by Rev. Hendrix of Oak Grove, a former pastor. The body was laid to rest in the Wight cemetery in Webster township.
