Wednesday, December 14, 2005Harry E. Saxton, 82 of Creston, formerly of the Macksburg area died Tuesday, December 13, 2005 at the Crest Haven Care Centre. Services will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday, December 17, 2005 at the Powers Funeral Home, 601 New York Avenue Creston. Pastor Mark Woldruff will officiate.
Burial will be at the Moon Cemetery in Macksburg.
Open visitation from 1-7 pm Thursday, December 15, with the family receiving friends 5-7 pm, as well as open visitation from 9-5 Friday at the Powers Funeral Home in Creston.
Memorials are to the C.A.R.E. Animal Rescue League 1623 Vanilla Avenue Creston.
Harry Elias Saxton, son of Cleo Marie (Gilbert) and Chester Saxton was born March 31, 1923 on the family farm southeast of Macksburg. In 1941 Harry graduated from Macksburg High School. He went on to study at Drake University. Additionally, Harry had started a band while in high school, and continued to play at clubs on Saturdays in Des Moines. Harry served his country in the United States Army Air Force from June 1944 to June 1945.
On September 11, 1946, Harry married Ruth J. Barker in Atchison, Kansas. They settled in rural Macksburg where Harry farmed most of his life. Harry also had an inventive nature. He had several items with patents pending. Harry divorced in 1998 and later moved to Creston.
Harry was a lifetime member of the Musicians Union and was formerly a member and secretary for the National Farmers Organization in Corning.
Survivors include his ex-wife Ruth (Barker) Saxton of Creston; two sons, Larry Saxton of Branson, Mo. and Roger (wife Mary) Saxton of Creston; daughter, Diane Abell of Creston; step-brother David (wife Marilyn) Libby of Macksburg; nine grandchildren, Scott Blum of Hollywood, Calif., Sonny Saxton, Amber Saxton, Dustin Saxton all of Springfield, Mo., Tiffany (Husband Mark) Tauscheck of Des Moines, Lacey Abell of Creston, Chelsey Abell of Creston, Paula Saxton of Bettendorf and Jeremy Saxton of Creston; and five great-grandchildren. Harry was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Eugenia Saxton Lattig.
