Death of Mrs. Phoebe Tilton

Mrs. Phoebe Tilton died at her home on South Second Avenue last Sunday, August 23d, aged 67 years. Mrs. Tilton, with her daughter Cora, moved to Winterset from the home in Scott township in April, and on July 1st, was stricken with paralysis. She rallied from the stroke for a short time, but later grew worse, and death was not unexpected. Ten children are left to mourn the loss of a loving mother, all of them being with her in her last illness, except one son, Benjamin E., of Montana who was unable to be here. The husband, Thomas W. Tilton, died in 1889.

Funeral services were held from the M. E. church on Monday at 2:30 p.m., conducted by Rev. W. G. Hobanshelt, and burial in the Rock City Cemetery.

MRS. THOS. W. TILTON

Phoebe Ellen McClain was born in Gallia county, Ohio, Dec. 28, 1846 and died at her home in Winterset, Iowa, Aug. 23, 1914, age 76 years, 7 months and 26 days.

She moved with her parents to Iowa in the year 1854 and located 16 miles south of Des Moines. When 12 years of age, her mother died of typhoid fever, being the oldest of seven children, she was left to care for and be a mother to those younger. Her father remarried and died July 13, 1896 age 75 years. Her foster mother is still residing on the old home farm.

She was married to Thos. W. Tilton Mar. 2, 1872, in Warren county, Iowa. They moved to Madison county in 1876, where she has since resided in different localities, moving to Winterset, April 2, 1914. Mr. Tilton died March 17, 1899 at his home in Scott township. To this union was born ten children, all of whom are living, they are: Cora M., who lived with her mother, and nursed and cared for her during her sickness; Carrie M., Lenora D., Benjamin E., William H., Homer G., Elvin J., Myrtle A., Lillie L. and Theo A. They are all living in or near Winterset, except Benjamin E., of Gainville, Mont., William and Myrtle of Norwalk and Carrie and Lillie of Des Moines. All were present at the funeral and during her illness, except Benjamin.

Besides her children, she leaves six grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. A. G. Purdy of Greenfield; a brother, Samuel at Fergus Flats, Alberta, Canada, a step sister, Mrs. Wm. Simmons of Ilo, Idaho and a step brother, Nathaniel, of Alta, Canada.

Funeral services were held from the M. E. church Monday at 2:30 p.m., conducted by Rev. W. G. Hohanshelt. Burial at the Rock City cemetery.
