Death of Mrs. Mary Gaekle

Winterset lost another of its interesting pioneers last week, when Mrs. Mary Huglin Gaekle died at her home in the southeast part of Iowa late Thursday night, July 19th. Mrs. Gaekle had been in poor health for a number of months, with heart trouble, dropsy and complications, and she gradually became weaker. She was 77 years of age.

The deceased was the tenth child of a family of eleven children, born to Mr. and Mrs. Joachim Huglin. She was born in Koenigsschaffanson, Baden, Germany, March 30, 1851, and came to America in December, 1854. They arrived in Madison county the following April and she had since made this county her home. Until her marriage she resided at the family home, near St. Charles.

On December 7, 1876, she was united in marriage to Andrew Gaekle, who was engaged in the restaurant business. Later they moved to their home, south of the North Ward school building, where they resided for twenty-five years. Since that time their home has been on East High street, where Mrs. Gaekle passed away. Mr. Gaekle was one of the town's pioneer restaurant owners, conducting a restaurant for many years where his son, Fred, is now engaged in business. Mrs. Gaekle had many acquaintances and friends over the county. She was raised a Lutheran, but after her marriage became a member of the Methodist church. She was a charter member of the Crown Rebekah lodge, and belonged to the local chapter of the American Legion Auxilliary.

The Rev. A. P. Keast conducted the funeral services at the Methodist church Sunday afternoon, July 22, at 2 o'clock, and burial was made in the Winterset cemetery. Mrs. Gaekle is survived by three sons, Robert and Fred of Winterset, and George, of Des Moines, and two daughters of Winterset, the Misses Hertha and Louise Gaekle. She also leaves one brother, C. E. Huglin of St. Charles.

Relatives and friends attending the funeral services from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. George Gaekle and George Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Huglin, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Moeckly and family, Miss Daisy Huglin, Mr. and Mrs. Gus Anderson and Jack, Mr. and Mrs. Jay Morrow, Mrs. Paul Miles and Miss Ethel Ricke of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. C.
