Separate P. Case was born in Clay county, Indiana, Sept. 2, 1838. From there he came with his parents to Jackson county, Iowa, in the fall of 1852. Here they wintered and then removed to Dallas county and settled near De Soto. In the spring of 1864 he enlisted in Co. C. 46th Iowa infantry, serving six months, being discharged on Sept. 23, 1864.
After returning home from the army he was married to Adline Adelphia Sherod, May 25, 1865. To this union eight children were born, six of whom died in infancy: Louis L., Fran, George W., Arthur, Lorena and Amy Aletha. The two living, Will J., and Ersie R., were present at his bedside when he passed away. His father and mother, brothers and sisters, except one sister, Mrs. Precilla Lampden of Cumberland have preceded him in death.
He was converted in the early sixties, before joining the army, at a Methodist camp meeting, and united with the Methodist church in De Soto. Later he transferred his membership to the First Methodist church in Winterset where he was a consistent and faithful member until his death. He loved the church and all its services and as long as he was able to attend, was always found in his accustomed seat.
He was one of the early pioneers that knew how to work and helped to blaze the way for the present generation. He leaves to mourn his death the loving and faithful companion, the two sons, a sister, other relatives and many friends. He was a member of the G.A.R. post in Winterset and will be missed by his comrades of the war. Funeral services were conducted from the Methodist church by the pastor, Rev. Jackson Giddens, and the remains laid to rest in the Winterset cemetery.
