Caroline Melissa Field was born October 19, 1853, in Madison county, on what is known as the Richard Bruce farm just west of Winterset. She was married March 1, 1878, to Lucius T. Field. They went at once to Russell county, Kansas, where they made their home for the next five years, when they moved to Manhatten, Kansas, where she resided till about seven years ago, when she returned to Madison county to care for her aged father.

Her husband died March 10, 1894. Mrs. Field had been in failing health for several months before her death, and though friends did all that could be done for her, she passed away on the morning of August 6, 1906, leaving to mourn her loss, her father, two brothers, four sisters, two sons and two daughters.

Short funeral services were held at the home, conducted by Rev. E. Bennett, after which the body was taken to Manhatten, Kansas, for interment. Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Orris, Lawrence L. Field, Mrs. Ora Torrey and Laura Underwood accompanied the remains. At Manhatten regular services were held at the M. E. church conducted by Rev. Lee, when the body was laid to rest in the lot by the side of her husband.
