Gilbert B. Woolery

Gilbert B., son of Eli and Mary Woolery, was born in Madison county, Iowa, July 9, 1858, and departed this life December 1, 1928, aged 70 years, 6 months and 11 days.

He was one of eleven children, all being dead but one sister, Mrs. Irene Males of Earlham. He was raised on a farm and received a common school education. On September 9, 1883, he was united in marriage to Ella Robertson, of Mitchell county, Kansas, and to this union were born four children, two dying in infancy and two lived to be grown, Ernest M. died March 25, 1908, and Mary Irene was taken March 20, 1912. His wife departed this life May 29, 1907.

On August 16, 1910, he was married to Nancy Stinson who was taken to her eternal home April 14, 1920. Thus being left alone he went to Macon county, Missouri, to live with a niece, Mrs. David Peterson.

In March, 1887, he united with the Sharon church of regular Primitive Baptists, in Guthrie county, and in a few years he moved his membership to Middle River church in Madison county, where he was soon ordained as deacon.

He and his first wife and two children, went to Missouri in the winter of 1903 - 1904, where he had since resided, having located in Brookfield when he first went there. He was clerk of the Western Association of Primitive Baptists in Iowa for several years before going to Missouri. He also served as clerk of the Yellow Creek association for several years. In April he united by letter with the Liberty church in Lyon county, and was soon chosen as clerk of that church, where he retained his membership. In June 1927, he came to Earlham, to make his home with his sister, Mrs. Irene Males.

The funeral services were held from the M. E. church of Earlham, conducted by Rev. Jones, Baptist minister, assisted by Rev. McEldowney, pastor of the Methodist church. He was laid to rest beside his children in the Worthington Cemetery.
