Winterset Madisonian
November 1928

Lester John, son of Benoni and Mazana Hill was born in Penn township on April 4th, 1876. He was the youngest of three children and until the time of his death was the last survivor of the family. The father and mother died some years ago, also a sister Effie, who was eight months old at the time of her death, and a brother Frank, who died when twenty-one years old.

Mr. Hill was married to Nellie Flemming on November 7, 1900, and their happy union was blessed by four children, Frank, Bruce, Gladys and Howard.

All of Mr. Hill's fifty-two years except two were spent in Penn township. Those two were lived in Madison township on what is now the Riser Bros. farm.

He was a birth-right member of the Friends Church, and later expressed a preference for the Presbyterian, and there gave his aid.

Some time ago Mr. Hill became sick and his condition necessitated his removal to the Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, where his daughter was receiving training. Mrs. Hill went with him and for almost five weeks was his constant helper and comfort. Through his suffering from awful fever and weakness he complained not, but always was hopeful that he would return to his beloved family and home. At times he seemed somewhat improved and greatly enjoyed the visits with the home folks, but after one such visit the frail heart gave way, and in spite of medical skill and tender care and the ardent desire of his loving wife and family to keep him here, Lester Hill passed from this world on Sunday night, November 11, 1928.

Mr. L. J. HILL DIED SUNDAY

Succumbed Sunday Evening After a Lingering Illness of Several Weeks. Life Biography Read at the Funeral Service Wednesday Afternoon.

To Mr. Hill his family and home meant everything, and his greatest joy centered around those cherished possessions. He loved the surroundings of his farm home and seldom left their shelter. He was an able agriculturalist and successfully followed the varied pursuits of his chosen work, imparting to his three sons his store of knowledge and fruits of his experience.

His was a quiet and very unassuming nature, his friendship was much valued by his neighbors, and he was held in high regard by the whole community where he will long be missed. The community extends sympathy to the bereaved wife and family.

The remembrance of an upright and loving father is a beautiful heritage.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon from the Presbyterian Church with Rev. Peter Bock officiating. Burial was in Earlham Cemetery.
