Winterset Madisonian
May 1928

Phebe Ann Barnett, daughter of Zimri and Anna Barnett, was born in West Newton, Indiana, November 28, 1859. In 1872, she came with her parents to Dexter, Iowa. After three years they moved to a farm two miles southeast of Earlham. Later the Barnett home was in Stuart a few years, coming back to Earlham, permanently, in the spring of 1883.

While living in Stuart she was united in marriage to William R. Hill, Feb. 6, 1883. Her new family life was begun in Des Moines, but was soon changed to Earlham, where she has almost continually resided. To Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Hill were born two daughters. Mr. Hill died January 15, 1912. After his death, Mrs. Hill took up the profession of nursing, to which she brought years of practical training, ready adaptability, broad sympathy, a kindly heart, a cheery companionship and a sweet spirit which made her gentle presence one of comfort and joy to many homes in this and other communities.

She was a birthright member of the Friends Church, also a member of the Earlham Chapter of the Order

She leaves the two daughters, Mrs. Hattie Hamm of Hermiston, Ore., and Mrs. Marie Monroe of Colfax, Iowa, the two sons-in-law, three grandsons, one brother and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Willis Barnett, a small circle of relatives, many close friends, and a sorrowing community.
