Gussie Lilley Emerson was born August 22, 1861 at Batavia, Iowa and was married to J. S. Emerson at Winterset, June 19, 1881 and January 4, the pale angel of death called for her and she being ready went triumphantly over the mystic river. At the age of 12 years she was converted and from that time on her whole life was filled with the many virtues and graces of christianity. Her sufferings were long and very severe at times, yet she endured all with patience. She was a friend to everyone, a loving wife, and devoted mother. Though a beautiful christian life has seemed to go out on earth, yet in the memory of friends left behind, it will continue to shine, and in her last moments the veil that hangs between the two worlds became so thin that as she looked up, said to those anxious ones around her bed, "Oh, how beautiful. Don't you see the lovely scenes?" She was laid to rest in the Peru cemetery. May peace be to her sleeping dust. The funeral services were held at her home conducted by Rev. J. H. Creger.
Oh, call it not death, it is life begun
For the waters are passed, the home is won.
The ransomed spirit has reached the shore
Where they weep and suffer and sin no more.
She is safe in her fathers house above
In the place prepared by her Savior's love.
Then cheer ye fond friends who sadly weep,
For happy are they who in Jesus sleep.
