Page 6, Columns 6, 7, & 8Laura Mae Smith was born in Madison County, Iowa, April 11, 1889. She was the daughter of Thomas and Eliza Hiatt.
She was educated in the Ackworth Academy and taught school for one year at Centerville School in Ackworth before her marriage to Delno Smith Nov. 26, 1908. Most of their life was spent in Warren County. To this union were born four children, Krell and Laurel Smith, now deceased, and Arlene Haldeman and Wyman Smith of Indianola.
Laura Smith was raised with four sisters, Florence, Alice, Nettie and Inez.
Her family was Quaker and after her marriage and a move to Indianola she joined the Methodist church. She was a charter member of the Willis Bible class United Methodist and a 50-year member of the Women’s Society for Christian Service at First United Methodist Church.
Laura Smith died at the Indianola Good Samaritan Center May 28, 1978, following a lengthy illness.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Delno; two sons, Krell and Laurel; three sisters, Florence, and Alice Hiatt and Nettie Allen. Also, her parents Thomas and Eliza Hiatt.
She is survived by a son Wyman Smith of Indianola; her daughter, Arlene Haldeman of Indianola; a sister Inez Smith of Ackworth, three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held May 31, at the Peterson Funeral Home with the Rev. James Hartman officiating. Interment was in the Indianola IOOF Cemetery.
