Virginia Ann Cash (Towns), age 90, of Monroe, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, October 8, 2023, at her home in Monroe. A visitation will be held at the Monroe United Methodist Church on Thursday, October 12, 2023, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. A funeral service will follow the visitation starting at 11:00 AM. Burial will take place at Gifford Cemetery in Monroe immediately following the funeral. A luncheon will be served at the Monroe United Methodist Church following the burial, and all are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made out to the Monroe United Methodist Church or the Monroe Fire Department. Online condolences may be left at coburnfuneralhomes.com.

The daughter of Robert and Eva Towns, Virginia was born on May 17, 1933, in rural Madison County, Iowa. She grew up on her parents’ farm and went on to graduate from Zion High School in 1951. On August 8, 1965, she was united in marriage to Donald Cash. After moving to Monroe, Virginia took a job as a cook at the Monroe Elementary School where she was known for her cooking and would go on to stay at the school until her retirement. Virginia loved to golf, so it was only natural that she went and worked at the golf course in Monroe. She loved working in the clubhouse, getting to visit with many.

Throughout her life, Virginia enjoyed many hobbies and activities. She was a lifelong sports fan, always happy to cheer on her beloved Hawkeyes or Cubs. She always enjoyed solving crossword puzzles and loved to read books. In the summertime she would spend time tending to her garden and admiring the flowers. Virginia and her husband, Don, spent many evenings driving around looking for wildlife. This was an activity that she shared with her kids in later years. You can’t talk about Virginia without mentioning cooking. She was wonderful in the kitchen. Her kids mentioned her homemade chicken and noodles as one of her best dishes. She spent many years helping in the kitchen at the United Methodist Church, and her cooking was always enjoyed! Most of all, she cherished spending time with her family and friends. After retiring from the school, she and her former coworkers would have monthly “meetings” for lunch at Pizza Ranch or Culvers, just to catch up. Virginia was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Without a doubt, her family was the most important part of her life.

Those left to Honor Virginia’s memory include her children; Lori (Ron Quinn) Barberi, Jodi (Thad) Nearmyer, and Doug (Melissa) Cash, grandchildren; Jordan (Sara) Oltmans-White, Dylan White, Kirsten Warrick, Jacob Warrick, and Zeb (Kylie) Laurie, great grandchildren; Elliott, Finley, and Madelyn, as well as her sisters; Bert Ehm, Bonnie Powell, and Karen Schaff.

Preceding Virginia in death include her parents, her husband; Donald Cash, and a sister; Thelma Clark.
