Lois E. Smith, 89, formerly of Earlham, Iowa, died January 26, 2006 at West Bridge Care and Rehabilitation Center in Winterset. No services are planned. The cremains will be interred at Bear Creek cemetery at a later date.

She enjoyed playing the piano, planting and taking care of her flower garden. She raised, bred and exhibited Collies and Shetland Sheepdogs. She was a longtime member of the Nebraska Collie Club and the Des Moines Kennel Club. She obtained her AKC license to judge both of these breeds.

Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Jack H. Smith. She is survived by a daughter, Nancy (Ray) Johnson of Des Moines; a sister, Jane Alden of New London; two grandchildren, Robert (Carla) Johnson and Jana (Dion) Cobb; and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Collie Health Foundation or Middle River Hospice, Winterset, Iowa.
