Ed, as he was known by family and friends, was born August 31, 1936, to Orville and Mary (McCamey) Hutchins. He grew up in the Adel area and attended rural schools. Ed was united in marriage to Dorothy Carmichael on December 22, 1952, in Winterset, Iowa and to this union four children were born, Karen, David, Larry, and Tammy. Following their marriage, they lived in Redfield to raise their family. Ed’s first job, which he started at 16 years old, was at the Redfield Brick Yard where he worked for 10 years. After working for a year for Northern Natural, he went to work as a driver for the Adel Ready Mix concrete company for another 10 years. He then went to work for Dallas County secondary roads where he drove a maintainer keeping the roads in good condition. He especially enjoyed working to keep the roads passable during the winter snow storms to allow people to get to work, school and doctors. He retired from this job that he loved in 1998 after 20 years of service. Ed enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, deer hunting, fishing, mushroom hunting, family camping trips or anything outdoors. He also enjoyed working on cars and tractors, scrapping iron, and gardening. Above all else, Ed enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, and telling and retelling stories of his life experiences.

He was a member of the Church of Christ having been baptized on February 6,1968 in Menlo, Iowa. For the last 38 years Ed was a member of the Hickman Road Church of Christ in Des Moines.

Ed is preceded in death by his parents Orville and Mary, brothers, Bill, Orbie, Bobby, Lloyd Hutchins, and grandchildren Michael and Edward (Eddie) Gilmer.
