Alice Faye (Haines) Fritz was born on Sept. 30, 1935, in Winterset, Iowa, to Ollie Maurice and Esie Fay (Armstrong) Haines. She grew up in rural Winterset and worked at the Madison County Hospital as a teenager. She graduated from Winterset High School in 1953, and attended the University of Iowa for a year. Alice then lived in the Des Moines area for several years where she married, had her son, Michael Johnson, and worked at Bishops Cafeteria, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Bankers Lie Company.

Alice divorced her first husband and raised her son with the help of her grandmother until she met Vernon Russell Fritz at the Val Air Ballroom in 1963. The two were united in marriage on June 27, 1964, at the United Methodist Church in Jefferson. The couple made their home in rural Grand Junction and had their daughters, Pamela and Paula.

In addition to helping on the farm, Alice worked part time for T.R. Watts & Son and the Globe Free Press. Alice and Vernon moved into town in 1985, where they lived until 2022. Alice worked several part time jobs until she found her calling, providing childcare in their home.

She loved and nurtured all the children and treated them like family. In her spare time, she was active in the community, attending local events, gatherings, and meetings. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Order of Eastern Star El Carim Club, American Legion Auxiliary, Businesswomen of Grand Junction, Lion’s Club, and was Mother Advisory of the local chapter of the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls.

Alice’s highest priority and greatest joy was her family. She valued every moment spent with her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She attended their countless concerts, recitals, performances, and games. Alice and Vernon moved to the Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone in 2022, where Alice passed away on Aug. 6, 2023, surrounded by her loving family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Maurice and Fay; sister, Shirley Foshe; and brother, Jim Haines.

She will be dearly missed by her husband of 59 years, Vernon Fritz; children: Michael Johnson (Wanda) of Winterset, Pamela Davis (Rick) of Grand Junction, Iowa; and Paula Fritz (Lee Budesheim) of Omaha, Neb; four grandchildren: Orion Johnson (Holly Christopher), Noelle Clouse (Charlie), Erin Budesheim, and Benjamin Budesheim; four great-grandchildren; Logan Johnson, Chloe Johnson, Cheyenne Clouse, and Avery Clouse; other relatives, and so many friends.

Celebration of Life Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 2, at Hastings Funeral Home in Jefferson. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service and after the service until 4 p.m.
