James Steel (1894)

STEEL

Transcriber’s note: No obituary for this individual has been found. The most likely publication date would have been the first issue of 1895, which is on line but in very bad shape. There was also a St. Charles newspaper in that era but those papers were not preserved. The information below was published three weeks before his death and describes his health issues. "Steel" is the surname on his gravestone.

St. Charles and Vicinity

James Steele, the unfortunate man who has been a confirmed cripple for almost thirty years, having about the first day of July, 1868, been thrown from a vicious pony, which not only threw him, but also fell upon him, dislocating his spine and leaving him almost helpless, has been brought home to his brother’s house in St. Charles from Bevington (where he has spent the last year), a very sick man. He has been unwell for some six weeks, but has had no medical treatment, and is in a bad condition. It is hoped that skill and good nursing will soon restore him to his usual health.
