Donald Francis Cain, 79, of Cumming, Iowa, passed away on July 3, 2023 after a long battle with cancer.

Don was born in Cumming, Iowa on July 9, 1943, to Robert and Clare Cain. He graduated from Dowling High School in 1961. He would then go on to attend Creighton University in Nebraska and then on to complete his double undergraduate degree from the University of Missouri in Social Work and Business. Don also served in the Army Reserve, during the Vietnam War. Following his time in the service and with academia, Don moved on to his lifelong career of more than 30 years with Principal Financial Group, where he retired.

While Don had a successful career, his passion was his farm. He loved tinkering around on projects, spraying thistles, fixing fence and cutting fence posts out of hedge trees. He loved mowing/raking hay and caring for cattle. But most of all, he loved passing down his passion, work ethic, and farm support to his son, and those who wanted to take part in his glorious outdoors.

Don was friendly to all and was the very definition of altruistic. A selfless, humble, kind and caring person who never wanted anything and needed nothing. Always concerned with others’ well-being, even up until the very end. He was a people person, a dear friend and wonderful father and grandfather that would lend his ear, strength and advice to anyone who needed it. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Don’s faith and the Catholic church were extremely important to him. A proud grandfather who would take his little granddaughter to church on Sundays. The Lord he loves so much has called him home.

Don is survived by his brother, Michael; his son, Nicholas (Jeika Pinero); granddaughter, Maria Pinero-Cain; and two nieces, Susan Wong and Rebecca Ederveen.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Clare; a daughter, Stacy Rundlett; and longtime friend, Eva Pennick.

All are invited to a visitation from 10:00 to 10:30 a.m., Friday, July 7, 2023 at the St. Patrick Irish Settlement Catholic Church in Cumming followed by a Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will follow in the St. Patrick Irish Settlement Cemetery. Please join us in his celebration of life.
