Obituaries – Dora Adeline Bertholf

Dora Adeline Bertholf, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Zack Bertholf, was born near Winterset April 3, 1862 and died in Colorado Sunday, Febr. 4, at the age of 77 years, 10 months and one day. She attended the public schools of the district and Sept. 21, 1879, at the age of 17 she married Irvin Sumner Coakley.

In 1883 Mr. and Mrs. Coakley and two children followed the westward movement and settled in Boulder. In January 1884, Mrs. Coakley and son and daughter, went by train and wagon to Plateau Valley where they made their permanent home.

In her later years it was a pleasure for her to recall the dates and circumstances of the founding of the first school, the first post office, the first store, the first wedding and the first death, the naming of Collbran, the first road up Plateau Valley Canon and the first Fourth of July celebration and many others.

She is survived by her husband, Ervin Coakley; four daughters, Mrs. P. Carnahan and Mrs. Claud Roach, both of Collbran,Colo.; Mrs. Stella McGrade of Los Angeles, Calif.; one son, Lyle Coakley. Another son, Gail Everett, preceded his mother in death in 1936. Two sisters, Mrs. Ida Coakley of Vallejo, Calif.; Mrs. Elsie Pierce, Aspen, Colo.; one brother, Arthur Bertholf of Grand Junction, 23 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren survive.

Funeral services were held in the Congregational church, Rev. J. C. Mardis officiating. Burial was made in Cedar Crest cemetery.
