Dale Smith

Ralph Dale Smith passed away on June 2, 2023, at his home in Columbia, MO with his family by his side.

Dale was born on February 7, 1954, to Betty Lucille Smith and Laurice Lee Smith in Maryville, MO. He grew up in Winterset, Iowa and after graduating from Winterset High School in 1972, he went to the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa and graduated with a BS degree in Mathematics Education and a minor in Coaching in 1976. In 2012 he received a Master's in Education from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

He was a teacher and coach for 47 years. He taught in the Dunkerton CSD, in Dunkerton, Iowa, Dexfield CSD in Redfield, Iowa, Johnston CSD in Johnston, Iowa, Green County CSD in Jefferson, Iowa and Jefferson City CSD in Jefferson City, Missouri. He taught Mathematics, Algebra, Calculus, Statistics, Applied Math. He coached at various schools, junior high boys' basketball and track, and high school girls' basketball, volleyball, track and softball.

Dale is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sondra Lee Goodenberger Smith, his son Matthew and wife Devon and son Carter of Fort Collins, CO. He is also survived by his brother Gary Smith and his wife Lisa of Winterset, Iowa. His sister Jean Wagner and her husband Craig of Winterset, Iowa, his brother Kevin and his wife Tammy of Afton, Iowa and his sister-in-law Jennifer of De Soto, Iowa.

Dale is preceded in death by his parents, Betty and Lee Smith, and his brother Steve (Toad) Smith.

Dale enjoyed cooking, gardening and landscaping and working outside, reading, music and camping with his family. Dale was an avid follower of the Iowa Hawkeyes, especially men's basketball. He also loved his dogs and tennis.

At his request, Dale will be cremated. A Celebration of his life will be held on June 17th at the pavilion at his home from 3:00 to 9:00 PM. He asked that any memorial contributions be made to the Boys and Girls Club in Jefferson City, MO or any Boys and Girls Club near you.

Dale had an infectious smile. He was very accepting of everyone; he had an enormous heart and especially loved all kids. He made a large impact on family, nieces and nephews, friends, coworkers and students wherever he was. He will be missed by so many people.
