Gale Haxton Victim Of Heart Attack

Hearts here were deeply saddened by the death of Gale Maxton (sic) who lived only a few minutes after a blood clot entered his heart while attending a community fair in Mountain View Saturday night. He had had a medical examination about two months earlier, before his doctor had to leave for military service, and was believed to be in perfect health.

Gale was a friend to all he met, both young and old. He had served on the board of education for Gotebo schools and the occasion which led to his election two factions could not agree on a candidate and each made a list of people who would be agreeable to them, and Gale's name was on both lists. The Presbyterian church could not hold the crowd who came from every walk of life to pay their last respects to Gale Haxton, Monday, August 27, 1951 at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. C. E. Dodge of Amarillo, Texas, former pastor here, officiating.

Bernard Gale Haxton was born October 12, 1895 in Earlham, Iowa to Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Haxton, and moved to Gotebo with his parents in 1906 when they brought their horses, farm machinery and household goods in freight cars and lived in town while they built their large barn, then moved northeast of town where they continued to build until their farm looked like a village.

Gale who served in World War I entered the service October 1, 1917 and saw action in such battles as St. Mehil and Meuse Argonne and during this action was gassed. He received an honorable discharge at Camp Arkansas June 19, 1919. He was with Co. H-357 Infantry.

He was married to Barbara Anderson, January 19, 1921 and three children were born to this union.

Gale was an active member of the Presbyterian church, a member of the American Legion Post, on the board of directors of the soil conservation district; a member of the pure alfalfa seed association and of the sheep growers association.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Marion and Guy and by his father C. M. Haxton, August 21. 1938. Survivors include his widow of the home; three sons James Bernard Haxton, Gotebo; Richard Anderson Haxton, Pueblo, Colorado; Donald Paul Haxton, Capron; his mother Mrs. C. Haxton, 86, Gotebo; four sisters: Mrs. Fern Lyde, Gotebo; Mrs. C. M. Fetterling, Pamona, California; Mrs. A. B. Compton, Audubon, Iowa; Mrs. Charles Feitz, Colorado Springs, Colorado; four brothers: Milan, Doyle, Ross, and Glen, all of Gotebo; five grandchildren: Linda Carol, Janice Lea, Bess Elizabeth, Richard Paul and Dianne Barbara Gale; and several other relatives.
