John Ainsley, Winterset old timer, died December 29 in Mitchell, South Dakota, where he has lived for the last 20 or more years. John was born in Madison county and came into Winterset about 1880.
When Major Palmer, then owner of The News, discarded the old Washington hand press for a cylinder, John furnished the power. There was no small engines then and no electric motors. John was The News engine until Winterset installed an electric light plant, The News buying the first electric motor in the city. The motor could be used at night for there was no day current. The motor was discarded as soon as small gasoline engines came into use, and in turn was discarded for electric motors when we changed from direct to alternating current.
John was a faithful hardworking man. The News followed him to South Dakota and every Christmas since we had a letter of good cheer from him. He was never married and lived with relatives in Mitchell.
