County Briefs – Truro

Bige Heaton who has been in poor health for the past year died Tuesday, October 13 at his home here. The funeral was held Thursday at two o’clock from the Kale funeral home and the remains were laid to rest in the New Virginia cemetery.

Mr. Heaton came here in 1929 as agent for the C. B. & Q. R. Ry. Co., and has had charge of the business until about a year ago when he had given it up owning to his health and was retired early this year on a pension.

St. Charles

Mr. and Mrs. Leo Dick, H. A. Mueller and Henry Imes attended the funeral services of Abijah Heaton Truro last Thursday afternoon. Burial services were held at New Virginia by the Masonic Order of Truro of which he was a member.

Abijah Heaton, familiarly known as “Bige” was born in Pennsylvania October 30, 1870, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Smith Heaton, who came to Madison county settling in Lee township were William Heaton had settled several years before. When Bige was seven years old his parents lived in Union township and he, with his brother William, attended the Farris school. With his parents removed to New Virginia where he grew up and later married.

He learned to be a telegrapher in St. Charles under J. Lee Fleming, who then was station agent on the Narrow Gauge railroad. After farming for a time he started to work for the Burlington and since 1929 has been at Truro where he was retired with a pension about a year ago. His wife died about a year ago.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Reed and Mrs. Dana Phillips of Truro. He was a member of the Methodist church of Truro, of Ivy Lodge and Ivy Chapter O. E. S. Of Truro.
