Judith Philips Weinkauf died February 1, 2022, following a brave struggle with cancer. Judi was born in Waukon, Iowa, in November 1937, to Mary and Gerald Owens. She spent much of her life in Des Moines, Iowa, where she raised three children with first husband, James Philips.

While in Des Moines, Judi was an admired actress and took on many other roles in local theater. She was an avid and competitive league-bowler. Never afraid of new challenges, Judi went to cosmetology school in the 1980's, obtained her license, and started her own in-home salon serving a devoted clientele.

Judi moved to Phoenix, AZ, in 1988, where she married her high school sweetheart, David Weinkauf. With Dave's help, she succeeded where many others have struggled, becoming an accomplished golfer in her 50's. She was a passionate golfer and fan of the sport until her passing.

Those who knew Judi will understand how difficult it is to describe her in a few paragraphs. Caring. Devoted friend to many. Outspoken. A bit stubborn. OK, very stubborn. A wonderful cook. ("Don't you dare leave out the butter.") Loyal and loving to those who were loyal and loving to her. One-of-a-kind. She'll be missed.

Judi is preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, and her beloved dog, Cookie. She is survived by husband Dave, children Tim Philips (wife Barb) of River Falls, WI, Todd Philips (wife Faye) of Des Moines, and Tricia Detjen (husband Paul) of Chicago, IL. Her stepchildren include Mike Weinkauf, Laurie Goeman (husband Terry), and Liz Magee (husband Ted) all residing in Minnesota. Judi was blessed with several grandchildren – Brianna, Cameron, Matthew, Emily, E.J., Eliana, Paul, Connor, John, Kate, Clare, Kelsey, Kayla, Samantha, and Molly. Judi also leaves behind her devoted dog, Pye.

In her final days, Judi received loving care from her husband Dave, daughter Trish, stepdaughter Liz, and grandson Matt. Later this year, her family will hold a private gathering to celebrate her life. Expressions of sympathy to Judi's family are appreciated; but please don't bother with flowers or memorials. Instead, do something nice for one of your family members, a friend, or a loyal pooch. Think of Judi when you do it. She'd like that.

Transcriber's note: Burial of cremains in the Winterset, Iowa cemetery.
