MADISON PIONEER DIES ON THURSDAY

Mrs. Peter Hubbard, Marybelle Hubbard, last member of the Harvey Lee family, early pioneers of Madison county, died May 2 at her home in Guthrie Center. The family came to the county in 1855 from Edgar county, Illinois, living for a short time with James Brown, whose home was just above the present site of the Fletcher covered bridge. The crossing at that time was known as Brown’s Ford.

Mr. Lee later built a log cabin in Union township where the family lived during the winter, moving later to Lee township about a mile north of the John Cunningham place, where they had built a new home.

When the Lee family moved to what is now known as Lee township, it was called Badger township and was composed of part of Jefferson and all of Lee townships. Jefferson was cut off from Badger in 1856 and in 1858 the remainder of the township was named Lee in honor of Harvey Lee. In 1863 believed farm was sold to John Cunningham when the family moved again to Union township.

Mrs. Hubbard was married in Winterset April 9, 1868. They lived in Lee township moving in 1881 to Adair county. For twenty years Mrs. Hubbard had lived in Guthrie Center. Mr. Hubbard died about eight years ago. Six of their eleven children are living.

Services were held Saturday in the Christian church in Guthrie Center and burial was made there. Mr. and Mrs. Herman Mueller of St. Charles, drove to Guthrie Center to attend the services of an old family friend of Mr. Mueller’s parents.

OBITUARY OF MRS. PETER HUBBARD

Mrs. Mary E. Hubbard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey A. Lee was born in Frankfort, Indiana, March 10, 1848. In the early 50s she came to Iowa with her parents in a covered wagon

The age of 13 she became a Christian. At that time she joined the Christian church and has been a faithful member of that communion for 74 years.

April 9, 1868 she was United in marriage to Peter Hubbard at Winterset, Iowa. To this union 11 children were born, 5 of whom have preceded their mother and death. Those having passed away before their mother are Harvey A.; W. E.; Nickolas J.; Frances B.; and Mary Emeline Hubbard.

Following their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Hubbard settled on a farm near Booneville, Iowa, which place was their home for 13 years. In 1880 when they moved to Adair county where they lived for 20 years. In 1901 they moved to Guthrie county, near Monteith which county has since been their home with the exception of a period of about 11 years spent in Gallatin, Missouri. In 1914 they moved to Guthrie Center that they might be near the church of their choice, and in 1918 moved into the Hubbard home in which she passed away.

Mr. and Mrs. Hubbard were both active in the Christian church of Guthrie Center as long as health permitted. It was Mrs. Hubbard’s happy privilege to be the one to turn the first spade full of dirt in breaking the ground for the local Christian church building.

After a happy and fruitful wedded life of 59 years, Mr. and Mrs. Hubbard were separated by the death of the husband and father in March 1927. Since that time she has lived more in the past than the present. For the past several years Mrs. Hubbard has been in failing health, and so was denied pretty largely the pleasure of an active church life. The last year her site has failed her so much that she could hardly read.

Mrs. Hubbard’s last illness was only about 10 days duration and Thursday afternoon, May 2, 1935 at 3:35 p.m. she slipped peacefully and quietly into the blessed rest which she had so faithfully earned, at the age of 87 years, 1 month, 2 days. She leaves to mourn her passing, six children: Geo. H., and P. S. Hubbard of Casey, Iowa; Mrs. Eva A. Snyder of Julesburg, Colorado; Arthur C. Hubbard the Los Angeles, California; Joseph E. Hubbard of Des Moines, Iowa and Rosa Hubbard at home, all of whom were at her bedside as she slipped away, except the daughter in Colorado who could not come at this time because of the serious illness of her husband, and the son in California. Besides these there are 27 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and 1 great great-grandchild.

She lived a beautiful life and died a beautiful death. May she have the twofold resurrection - one into the great life beyond with her Lord and her loved ones, the other in the many lives that remain here on earth, blessed and purified by her influence.

Funeral services were held in the Christian church in Guthrie Center, Saturday afternoon, May 4, 1935 at 2 p.m. conducted by Rev. L. V. Freeman the local pastor and Rev. S. P. Williamson of Fairfield, Iowa. Music was furnished by a mix quartet, Mrs. C. R. Ferry, Mrs. J. C. Seaman, Harry Hanner and Harry Mercer, Miss Janet Ferry presiding at the piano. Interment was made in the Union cemetery by the side of her husband.
