Dallas Center, IowaVada Garrett, 89, of Stuart died Thursday, September 17, 2020 at EveryStep Hospice Kavanagh House in Des Moines. Private family services will be 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 23 at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery.
Vada was born at home in Pitzer, IA on June 24, 1931. The family moved to Des Moines where she graduated from Lincoln High School. During high school, she served in the Iowa Women’s Civil Air Patrol. She and her husband, Paul, had four children, and ran archery ranges where they resided in Des Moines and the Wisconsin Dells. After losing, Paul at a young age, she married Bob Garrett, and they made their home in Stuart, IA.
Vada started Long Branch Crafts in Stuart where she made and taught the art of wax candles and ceramics. She participated in many of the major craft shows around Central Iowa. This eventually led to the naming of Wax Trail Drive in Stuart. For many years she led and organized the Stuart Farmer’s Market. She volunteered for various community activities and even worked at the Stuart Herald newspaper. Vada enjoyed reading and because of her strong faith, her favorite book was the Bible.
Survivors include Vada’s husband, Bob of Stuart; five children, Steve (Diane) Richardson, Dave Richardson, Mike (Patty) Richardson, Deb Sydnor (Larry Cooper) and John (Kathy) Garrett; 7 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; 2 siblings, Russ (Marge) Lowe and Don (Marcia) Douglas; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Richardson; her parents, Delbert Douglas and May (White) Douglas Lowe; and sister, Lois Overholt.
