Betty Rember, of Sawtooth Valley, died in Caldwell on Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008, in her 91st year, after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease. She was born Lois Elizabeth Leveke in Winterset, Iowa, on Dec. 27, 1917, to Harry and Evalyn Leveke.
The family moved to Buhl, where Betty's parents had a farm during the Great Depression. She graduated from Buhl High School and was awarded an R.N. after training at Holy Cross Hospital in Salt Lake. Most of her nursing career was spent at Sun Valley, where Dr. John Moritz was her mentor and friend.
Betty met Craig Rember while working at Sun Valley, and they married six months later on June 14, 1941. They made their home in Hailey and later in the Sawtooth Valley and were valued members of both communities. Their marriage, marked by dancing and laughter and grace, lasted until Craig's, death in November of 2001 .
Betty is survived by her son, William C. Rember of Moscow; and her son and daughter-in-law, John and Julie Rember of Sawtooth Valley. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Shaw and Ruth Engle; a son, Michael; and her husband, Craig.
At her request, no memorial service will be held, although those who remember her should plan a nice meal with friends to honor a person who left the world a better place than she found it. Would that we all could do as well. Betty's family appreciates. the loving care she received from the staff of Prestige Assisted Living at Autumn Wind and from the staff of XL Hospice. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Salmon River Clinic in Stanley or to a charity of your choice.
