Carolyn Joan Gilleland

Carolyn Joan (Hardin) Gilleland, 88, of Osceola passed away peacefully on Oct. 18, 2022.

Carolyn was born on Aug. 15, 1934, in Des Moines to Maurice and Lois Hardin (Sones). She grew up in Warren County and graduated from Indianola High School.

In 1951 she met the love of her life, Duane Gilleland, and they were married in 1952 while Duane was home on military leave. Together they had five children. Carolyn was a loving wife and mother and fully embraced the military life which resulted in many moves including Louisiana, Missouri, Nebraska, Arizona, and Germany.

Upon retirement, they settled in Winterset, Iowa, where Carolyn was a childcare provider and also worked for Jeanne’s Clothing.

Carolyn and her husband spent many years traveling the country in their RV, meeting new and old friends along the way. She was a self-taught keyboard player and loved to play during jam sessions in the many RV parks they stayed in. She also enjoyed making crafts and participating in flea markets to sell her wares.

Carolyn’s last years were spent with her husband in independent retirement living where they enjoyed many social activities including bingo and bags baseball. In 2020, Carolyn relocated to Osceola where she spent her remaining time in assisted living.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband, Duane; son, Dennis; daughter, Teresa Kelly; granddaughter, Shawna Gilleland; parents, Maurice and Lois Hardin; and brother, Jack Hardin. She is survived by sons Randal (Martha) of Osage Beach, Mo., and Duane Jr. of Tucson, Ariz.; daughter, Chris of Osceola; son-in-law, John Kelly of DeSoto; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; brothers, Don Hardin, Gary (Charlotte) Hardin, Dean Hardin, and Jim (Mabel) Hardin; and sister, Pat Gatrel.

The family will hold a celebration of life at a later date.
