The school still stands to this day and stands by the Penn Center Methodist Church. Winnie attended Park College in Parkville, Missouri and it was there she met her future husband. Winnie was united in marriage to Clarence F. Johnson on December 26, 1959. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2009.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in teaching from Drake University and taught in Dennison and Exira, Iowa. Together they moved to Greeley, Colorado where they both taught. While in Colorado they both attended the University of Northern Colorado (UNC) and graduated with their master’s degree in education. Winnie enjoyed sewing and many other crafts including making her own clothing. She enjoyed befriending foreign students who came to America to study at UNC. This led her to be active in assisting many foreign missionaries that her church supported.

(Roselea) Nellis of Olathe, Kansas; nieces and nephews, Duane (Carol) Nellis of Climax Springs, Missouri, Cynthia Ann (Bob) Kelly of Wichita, Kansas, Wesley (Debbie) Nellis of Lawrence, Kansas, Gwendolyn Mae Applegate of Redfield, Iowa, Sharon Kay (Monty) Davis of Redfield, Iowa, Thomas (Bea) Atkins of Johnston, Iowa and David (Debbie) Atkins of Nevada, Iowa.
