G. L. Stiffler.

G. L. Stiffler, a highly respected citizen of this community died at his home in this city at 4 o'clock Monday morning. He had suffered for some time with a complication of diseases but seemed to be improving, and his death was unexpected.

G. L. Stiffler was born in Indiana county, Pennsylvania, January 21, 1843. At the age of ten years he moved with his parents to the state of Iowa where he resided until the Civil war. When the war clouds were gathering thick and heavy and our government was being rent in twain, he responded to its call and in November 1861 joined the 47th Iowa Infantry and bravely endured the hardships and sufferings of the soldier's life until peace was declared in 1865, when he was honorably discharged.

On Nov. 4, 1866 he was joined by the holy bands of matrimony to Miss Lucy Star and to this union were born six children, three boys and three girls. Four of these with a broken hearted mother survive. Also three brothers and one sister, with a host of friends still linger on the shores of time to await that happy meeting when mortality shall have put on immortality and the corrupt shall put on incorruption and it shall be declared that death is swallowed up in victory.

We mourn not for brother Stiffler as for one who had no hope for when quite young he was converted and united with the Methodist Episcopal church of which he was a member in good standing when God called him on December 11, 1911, after many sleepless nights and weeks of suffering from the church militant to the great church triumphant.

He was an honored member of the G. A. R. post having filled the place of commander of the Rush Post 448, for four years.

The interment took place in the city cemetery, the remains being followed to the grave by many sorrowing friends.
