APACHE JUNCTION, Ariz. - Gloria Marie Thompson, 79, of Apache Junction, Arizona, died at 5:30 a.m. Aug. 17, 2020, at Eternal Hope Healthcare in Griffin, Georgia, from an aggressive form of brain cancer.

Gloria was born May 17, 1941, in Iowa City, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Harold "Ike" Thompson; as well as her parents, John Phillips and Leta Ford.

Surviving are her four children, Jerry (Terri) Thompson of Knoxville, Iowa, Natasha Thompson of Chandler, Arizona, Linda (Nathan) Rounds of Zebulon, Georgia, and Tondi (Bill) Hunter of Roseville, Illinois; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Also surviving is her partner, Raymond Penick of Carrollton, Georgia.

She enjoyed her family, gardening, cooking and baking, traveling in a RV (especially to Rhinelander and Cadott, Wisconsin, to attend country music festivals), country music, attending the Old Threshers Annual Reunion in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, poodles, crocheting, crafts, dancing, sunbathing, bingo and racquetball. In 1984, at the age of 42, she won the Class B State of Iowa Women's Racquetball title. She completed the legendary RAGBRAI in 1991 and especially loved meeting the friendly and hospitable Iowans along the way.

She spent many years in Ottumwa, Iowa, before relocating to Abingdon, Illinois, and finally to Arizona, where she enjoyed the sunny desert winters.

A private family service will be held graveside at Pleasant View Cemetery in Madison County, Iowa. The family asks that donations be made to Covered Bridges Scenic Byways, 73 Jefferson St., Winterset IA 50273, or poodleclubofamericarescuefoundationinc.org.
